My name is Karen Dobson, owner and instructor. I thought I would take a moment to share a little bit about myself to give you an idea of where I come from and why I do what I do.

I was born and raised in southern California. I come from a tiny country town called Somis. Most people won’t know where that is (even people who live in California!). It is a tiny town nestled about 25 minutes from historic Ventura, 45 minutes from Los Angeles, or about 45 minutes from sunny Santa Barbara. Needless to say, I spent many days at the beach.

Love for the water has been a part of my family before I was even born. Well, before my dad was even born too! My grandma started teaching private swim lessons when she was 15 and taught until she was 85. Growing up in my large family meant that everyone had to help teach at some point. “Had” was never really enforced as we all basically volunteered to help, even when we were just young kids hanging out during the summer.

In high school, I decided to work with my grandma full time and taught with her for a few years. To this day, it is still one of my most favorite times. I was able to help hundreds of children learn how to safely play in the water and give parents peace of mind.

Over the years, I spent time finishing college and exploring various job opportunities. I always felt something was missing and missed my time working with children. Many years have passed and my life has since brought me to beautiful Cumming, Georgia! Having a fresh start here has given me the opportunity to pursue my passion of working with children again; And what better way to do that than back in the water?!

Growing up in my tiny country town has made me the person I am today. I love to be kind and help others. I am beyond thankful to find those same morals in this great town too!

So why the name Swim Masters? My father worked all his life helping others through his company Lawn Masters. He has helped make thousands of family homes beautiful through his love for plants and landscaping. Although he is “retired” these days, he still can’t help himself from helping others. So in honor of my dad and all of the wonderful morals he has instilled in me, I present to you, Swim Masters!

There are many options out there for you to choose from, so why choose me? Each program is different but I can assure you that my family’s method has been proven successful for over 60 years. 

Many people often ask if I can guarantee that their child will be swimming after X amount of lessons. This is not something anyone can guarantee as each child is unique and learns in their own time. What I can guarantee is that your children will be in the best care while working with me and I will do my best to give you that peace of mind of safety around the water.
